A zippo is a great EDC lighter because you can use it in a wide range of windy and wet-weather conditions. It's also simple, easy to replace parts, and reasonably priced. You may want to get one with a wider wick if you're going to be using it for outdoor activities, though, as odds are you'll need more fuel when lighting due to the lower humidities outside.
How to choose the Best EDC Lighter?
There are a lot of factors that you need to consider when buying an EDC lighter. This article will discuss the six most important factors you need to consider when purchasing an EDC lighter.
1. Size and weight
When choosing an EDC lighter, one of the most important factors you need to consider is the size and weight of the lighter. You need to make sure that the lighter is small enough to fit into your pocket or bag, and it should also be light enough so that it does not weigh you down.
2. Fuel type
Another important factor to consider when purchasing an EDC lighter is the fuel type. The most common fuel types for EDC lighters are butane and propane. Butane is a cheaper fuel, but it cannot be easy to find in some areas. Propane is a more expensive fuel, but it is easier to find and burns hotter than butane.
3. Ignition type
When choosing an EDC lighter, you must consider the ignition type. The most common ignition types for EDC lighters are manual and automatic. Manual ignitions are ignited by hand, while a button or switch ignites automatic ignitions.
4. Windproofing
Another factor that you need to consider when purchasing an EDC lighter is windproofing. You need to make sure that the lighter can withstand strong winds. This is important because you do not want the lighter blown out by the wind.
5. Waterproofing
Another factor that you need to consider when choosing an EDC lighter is waterproofing. You must ensure that the lighter can withstand being submerged in water. This is important because you do not want the lighter to be damaged by water while you are using it.
6. Price
The last factor you must consider when purchasing an EDC lighter is price. You need to make sure that you find a lighter that is affordable for you. You do not want to spend too much money on a lighter you will not use often.
These are the six most important factors that you need to consider when purchasing an EDC lighter. Make sure you take your time and choose the right lighter.

Why Should You Have an EDC Lighter with You At All Times?
There are several reasons why everyone should always carry a lighter with them at all times. Whether it's an everyday carry (EDC) lighter, butane torch, or even a Zippo pipe lighter, there is no time or place when you should not have the ability to create fire.
1) Starting fires for survival purposes
Yes, matches are fine and all, but they tend to get wet because people sweat everywhere these days. And if you're in the woods or another humid environment, then you might find that your matches don't work very well, no matter how good of quality they are. Having an EDC lighter allows you more certainty that you will be able to start a fire instantly if needed. What is a better excuse to get out your knife and make your wooden match?
2) Use in place of primary tools
If you're like me, then most days, you won't always have time to stop what you are doing, settle down and enjoy the act of smoking your pipe. If this is an issue for you, I urge you to get yourself an easily accessible EDC pipe lighter.
3) Lighter fluid is flammable
Yes, this is an obvious one, but many people don't realize that the fuel for their lighters can be used as a fire starter itself. If your Zippo or other pipe lighter runs out of gas, then all you have to do is close it and unscrew the bottom piece where the wick resides. Once you've broken open the bowl, there will be enough residual fuel left on the wick to keep your tinder-dry wood smoldering until it catches flame.
4) Emergency tinder source
If you require tinder but cannot find any kindling nearby, then you can use lighter fluid directly onto your kindling and light it. This is a useful trick if you need to make a fire quickly and don't want to deal with the hassle of finding enough dry wood for ignition.
5) Quickly create a barrier
If you find yourself in an unfortunate situation where there's smoke filling up where you're at, then all you have to do is close and open your Zippo or other pipes lighter over and over again until the flame becomes large enough that it can create its winds. It will force all the smoke particles you are trapped within to escape through the cracks in windows, doors, etc. Note: Do not attempt this unless necessary because it will waste your lighter fluid.
6) Use as a last resort to signal for help
If you are currently lost, stranded, or otherwise in need of being found by someone else, then all you have to do is open up your Zippo or other pipes lighter and wave it around so that the flame catches enough wind to remain burning for at least 30 seconds. This will give rescue teams enough time to find you because they already know where you're searching for them. Also, keep in mind that this trick won't work much better than an air horn during nighttime hours. So if it's nighttime, then be sure to prepare something designed specifically for nighttime signaling purposes.
7) Ignition source when kindling is wet
If everything within your environment is wet after heavy rainfall, then all you have to do is create your kindling by shaving off the bark from dead trees or carving off slivers of dry wood. Next, put together your kindling in the form of a teepee formation around the piece of solid fuelwood that will be used for ignition. Now you can open up and close your Zippo or other pipes lighter over and over again until everything within your teepee pyre catches flame long enough for you to place larger logs on top without fear of them going out too quickly.
8) Dry-out damp tobacco
If there's water inside of your pipe bowl because it was raining outside while you were outside smoking, then all you have to do is open up and close your Zippo or other pipes lighter over and over again so that the flame becomes big enough to dry up the water in your pipe. This sounds a little out there, but you'd be surprised at how well this actually works.
9) Serves as a last resort gear-replacement resource
Suppose you find yourself entirely out of matches, lighters, flint & steel, etc., during an emergency survival situation. In that case, there's no shame in using your Zippo or other pipes lighter as an improvised fire starter that can be used for kindling. Once again, anything at hand will be used in an emergency survival situation if things become desperate enough.
10) Can be used to heat food/water sources
If you don't have any means of heating water or cooking food through conventional means, then all you have to do is open up and close your Zippo or other pipes lighter over and over again until the flame is big enough to be used as a heat source. The reason for this trick is because almost everything acts like a lens when it comes to directing the sun's rays into one area from high above where it happens to be shining from. You need to place a smaller object on top of your fire source. This will ensure that both objects receive equal amounts of heat energy without interruptions. This would cause them to lose contact after being heated so much. There really should be no need for any trial-and-error experimenting with this method if you already know how much time should be required so that food (or water) doesn't become too hot or cold.
10 Mistakes you should avoid when using an EDC lighter
1) Not properly adjusting the flame
You must adjust your lighter for wind or close quarters. If you're in a windy area, turn up the flame so it can maintain its combustion. Lower the flame to avoid accidental burns if you're using it indoors. Never leave your lighter on high when not lit- this wastes fuel and could make your lighter overheat!
2) Holding it at any angle besides 90 degrees
When lighting candles or BBQs, keep your Zippo at a 90-degree angle to prevent misfiring and poor combustion (AKA incomplete burning). That means don't be lazy- hold it steady! Especially if there are gusts of wind, this has happened to us at some point.
3) Using your Zippo on an unstable surface
Your lighter is only as stable as the surface you put it on. If you leave it on a flat, hard surface like concrete or metal, chances are this will create drag and cause your Zippo to misfire. Try to find a more natural-looking resting place instead of just powering through with your Zippo in hand!
4) Not cleaning out the residue
Every time you fill up your Zippo, you're inevitably going to get some gunk in there that's not supposed to be there. Although most people just flick the excess fuel away, this leaves behind particles that could collect enough dirt and grime from clogging something important. Therefore, pour the remaining fuel from your Zippo into a zippo cleaning fluid bottle and clean it with a q-tip now and then.
5) Using water
Do not use water to put out any flame that is not smoking or emitting smoke elements. Water makes oil-based fires spread and does not extinguish them! Use sand or beverage ash instead. Always make sure you have an appropriate fire extinguisher for the size of the fire rather than misusing water.
6) Forgetting about wind direction
Wind can make lighting things difficult if you don't consider it before applying heat to something else. In particular, lighters are most likely to misfire when the wind is blowing against the side where it's lit because this causes drag which makes the flame flicker. Mind how strong the wind is so you can hold your lighter at a higher angle if necessary!
7) Igniting an already existing fire
Unless you're trying to relight candle wax or something of that nature, don't try to use your Zippo just to get rid of smoke or embers. This wastes fuel and sometimes fails, potentially making things worse than before! Instead, only light up flames that are currently out. If the fire is still alive but dying down, make sure it has solid contact with another object (in case you missed anything) and apply heat until it's gone completely.
8) Don't be fooled by an illusion
If you've been using your Zippo for a long time, it's effortless to become complacent- especially if you've used it successfully in the past. But just because something has worked before doesn't mean it'll work now! For example, always check that your lighter produces a flame before trying to apply heat. People have failed to light up-lighters with their hands or faces and paid a hefty price for this mistake!
9) No lint piles please
Old rags, dirty clothes, and other things from around the house can cause dirt particles to accumulate inside of your Zippo over time. This buildup can make sparking difficult as well as reduce fuel efficiency. A simple solution is to burn these things in a fire or throw them away, but if you can't bring yourself to do that, find a way of regularly cleaning your Zippo and the external case.
10) Never use your lips
Your skin comprises several layers of tissue that work together to protect you from the environment. However, applying heat directly to it with a lighter causes thermal injury and burns! A simple solution is not to be lazy about shielding your hand when holding your lighter- try using both hands instead. But if for some reason you need to use it one-handed, be sure never to touch any part of your body while heating something else.
6 Tips for using an EDC lighter
An Everyday Carry (EDC) pocket lighter can be a fantastic tool for outdoor enthusiasts and the everyday man's necessities. However, it is not without its problems. Here are several things you can do to make using your lighter much more efficient and reliable.
1. Put O-rings on it!
O-ring lighters are easier to operate, maintain, and increase their ability to stay lit under any condition. Lots of people say "how?" but here's how: take two small standard sized o-rings (or one large double size) and pull both ends out like horns or ears, then snap them back into place like normal rings either above or below the prongs at top/bottom where they meet in the middle (don't stick them in the middle of the prongs). There are probably some more specific instructions somewhere, but it's not too hard. And you can always get replacement O-rings at any hardware store! This is very cheap and effective for lighters that don't have an o-ring carrier already (like most Bic style, Mini Bic, etc.)
2. Wrap a rubber band around it!
Okay, this one is pretty self-explanatory if you know what to do (wrap one end behind all four coils, then wrap the other end over the top of them all, forming a square/rectangular shape with the wrapped rubber band). If done correctly, your lighter should be able to sit there comfortably, like on its little stand. Just make sure it's a tight weave on your rubber band, or it won't hold together. Many people use this method because the bottom coil/spring on most lighters is too weak to support them while sitting on a flat surface and can cause some issues if you're not careful, but with a good rubber band stand, you'll never have another problem! This also helps avoid scratching up table surfaces that can sometimes be a nuisance when using a pocket lighter.
3. Take off the top lid of the lighter!
This one seems weird, but so many people don't seem to realize how useful it can be for lighting things without burning their fingers or getting their hands dirty from handling raw fuel etc. The best way I've found is by putting both thumbs on the top side of the lighter and pressing them in towards each other while pulling up with your index fingers (at least if it's a two-handed lighter). If you've ever seen someone else do it before, then congratulations, you know how to light your lighter properly! This makes lighting things so much easier when you're out camping or doing something where you need both hands free. Plus, it looks cool, right?
4. Clean the inside of the lighter!
This one takes a little finesse but can help improve airflow and fuel transfer significantly. What you want to do is take a small flat head screwdriver/flat metal object and jam it into that tiny hole at the bottom of where the wick usually sits and twist it around a bit (as pictured). You don't need to take the entire thing out; get it good and coated with fuel. Even if you do this every time, you refill it should help improve performance.
5. Add some flint!
This is very helpful for extending the life of your lighter and making sure that the flame is as reliable as can be. It's pretty simple: grab a few pieces of flint and dump them into where the wick usually sits and put the top back on (if necessary, but most lighters will close properly even with extra things in there)! This doesn't help airflow much but does allow for better consistency because sometimes the holes/nozzles inside will get clogged over time.
6. Flip the flint spring!
If you ever get tired of poking your lighter or feel like it's not lighting properly, flip the flint spring over and try again. It works great for me when things get a little gummed up, but otherwise, I've never had issues with the hole being too small on my lighter to accept a new spring or anything like that. Plus, I'm pretty sure Zippo specifically designs their springs to be easily flipped/reversed if they ever end up being inserted backward, so it should work just fine!
EDC lighter vs flashlight: What’s the difference?
The EDC lighter is a much more efficient and practical option because it can be used for barbecuing or cooking and lighting cigars. The flashlight will only be useful for those occasions when the sun has set and you need to see in the dark. Fortunately, we now have the tools and technologies that allow us to do many things long into the night without needing a flashlight. An EDC lighter makes an excellent addition to your everyday carry bag.
EDC lighter how to carry?
EDC lighters are popular among the EDC community.
It refers to something that can always be with you all day, every day. Typically this would involve the items being on the person's personality, in pockets, or otherwise connected to them at all times. So, for example, carrying a knife in your pocket with an attached chain around your belt loop where it will not move out of place or underneath your shirt is worn over one shoulder are both ways of realizing this guideline.
An EDC keychain may include keys, flashlights, knives, and other tools which help make life easier when you are on foot for most of the day, and light is needed most often when night falls.
This way, they are easily within reach and can be brought out of a pocket or bag in the dark without the need to turn on a bright light.
Final Verdict
The best EDC lighters are the ones you can rely on when you need to light a fire with ease. I hope this guide has helped, and I invite you to ask any questions about these products in the comments below! Have a great day!
